DATA WAREHOUSING

ENTERPRISE
DATA

Organisations will typically run many systems to support their operations. These transactional systems are often not designed for reporting, nor to communicate with other systems within the organisation.

Data warehouses allow organisations to consolidate data held in these disparate systems within a central data repository, for reporting and analytics to gain timely insight.

In its simplest form, data warehousing is the process of extracting data from the various systems within an organisation and loading into a central data repository which has been specifically designed to curate the organisations' data for queries and analysis. As part of the loading, the data will be cleansed and catalogued before being made available to business users in the form of dashboards, reports or ad-hoc querying.

Data warehouses are the core component of an organisations endeavours in Business Intelligence and Data analytics.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS OF A
DATA WAREHOUSE

1. Subject-oriented

Whilst most systems in an organisation will be functional or departmental (for example, Finance or HR), the data within a data warehouse will be subject-oriented, bringing together all the required data around a subject. IIf the subject was customers, we would look at the business processes to understand the systems and touchpoints which involve the customer. Those pieces of data would be included within the data warehouse.

2. Integration

Data integration is the process of combining data from different sources into a single view. Integration begins with the amalgamation process and includes steps such as cleansing, ETL mapping, and transformation.

3. Time-variant

For the majority of operational systems, the focus will be on the latest values, not the historical changes. A data warehouse stores historical data about your business so that you can analyse and extract insights from it. It does not store current information, nor is it updated in real-time.

4. Nonvolatile

All data in a data warehouse represents a snapshot in time, and should not be changed. As you analyse the data over different time frames, you will be able to analyse both the changes and when they occurred.

Aha Analytics have built data warehouses using industry-standard databases such as Oracle and SQL Server with expertise across the whole lifecycle. We aim to develop a cost-effective solution which can deliver you results in as short a time as possible. Most importantly, we understand that successful data warehouse projects are not differentiated by technology and tools, but through a deep understanding of business processes and operations. We work closely with business owners and deliver business outcomes in an agile fashion.
